Malabar rapier

South India, 18th century

A very rare rapier sword from the Malabar coast. The bronze hilt is very small and of symmetrical design with flared langets, and pointed quillions. The body features decorations of silver geometric chasing motifs. It has a dome shaped pommel finely inlaid with silver in a geometric design. Traces of gold to the remains of the hilts’ centrale square motive. 74.5cm flattened rounded section blade incised with a mark just above the forte.

A similar sword is kept at The National Museum, Edinburgh, Scotland – bought to the Paris Exhibition of 1855 by the East Indian Company. The sword is illustrated on the rear sleeve of Hindu Arms & Ritual by Robert Elgood.

86,5cm (33.86inch )
