Vatican city

19th century

A very nice six-shot Delvigne pinfire revolver from the Pontifical Gendarmerie. What makes this gun unique is that it was literally made in the Vatican Papal armory under the supervision of the Mazzocchi brothers. It's a Chamelot Delvigne patent specially adapted to meet the requirements of the newly formed Papal Gendarmerie under Pope Pius IX. A total of 2500 were made between 1868 and 1870 at 50 Papal lira each.

The revolver dates from about 1870 as one of the last production units. It has a round 9 milimeter caliber barrel with foresight and a smooth, six-shot cylinder. The gun is numbered 2458 but NOT marked with the Mazzocchi stamp. We have not found marked revolvers above serial number '2000'. It's not clear why they ceased to mark the remaining 500 pieces. The gun has a working mechanism and a spur trigger. The handle has checkered, wooden grips with a ring for the strap. In the internal of the grip frame there is a capital letter 'T' from the worker who made the gun. Condition is very good plus. Both the ring and attached scouring stick are newly made to make the revolver complete.
