The 'yali' dagger belongs to a series of brass-hilted daggers traditionally associated with south-western India.
Here we have a South Indian dagger with a heavy brass casted hilt in the form of a Yale (a mythological creature). The knuckle guard seems to suggest the monster is biting its own tail. Very much like the Ouroboros creature in Greek Mythology. The plain steel recurving blade is of low quality possibly suggesting 19th century made village work. Probably from the Mysore area. (see Elgood, Hindu Arms & Ritual). Very good condition, support stand included, no scabbard.
